Why did UC Irvine send me an acceptance letter now, when other applicants got it about a month ago?

You were in the pile where they weren't really sure. They took longer to get to your application because you weren't a first choice. I don't think it has anything to do with your gender, but probably the fact that you're trying for a position in engineering which is a really popular major.
